VINTON
WESLEYAN CHURCH

Brief History of Vinton Wesleyan Church

It all began eighty-nine years ago, in August 1934. With a heart to see the people of Vinton reached by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Rev. Clyde Dooley held a tent meeting in downtown Vinton. Just a few weeks later our church was born. Rev. James E. Kraus was called to shepherd the congregation with fourteen charter members meeting in the Old White Storefront on Lee Avenue.

Through their faithfulness and sacrifice, the congregation soon moved to the “basement” church on the corner of Jefferson and Poplar. In an effort to reach more people for Christ, the original facility has expanded to the beautiful facility we enjoy today.

Over the decades, under the leadership of eleven godly pastors, our church has continued to reach the people of Vinton with the Gospel message. Originally known as Pilgrim Holiness Church, upon the merger of the Pilgrim Holiness Church and the Wesleyan Methodist denomination in 1968, the name was changed to Vinton Wesleyan Church.

Those who have gone before us have left us a legacy of love, labor, sacrifice and prayer. Today it is our goal to continue that legacy as we do our part to expand His kingdom by…
