It all began eighty-nine years ago, in August 1934. With a heart to see the
people of Vinton reached by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Rev. Clyde
Dooley held a tent meeting in downtown Vinton. Just a few weeks later
our church was born. Rev. James E. Kraus was called to shepherd the
congregation with fourteen charter members meeting in the Old White
Storefront on Lee Avenue.
Through their faithfulness and sacrifice, the congregation soon moved to
the “basement” church on the corner of Jefferson and Poplar. In an effort
to reach more people for Christ, the original facility has expanded to the
beautiful facility we enjoy today.
Over the decades, under the leadership of eleven godly pastors, our
church has continued to reach the people of Vinton with the Gospel
message. Originally known as Pilgrim Holiness Church, upon the
merger of the Pilgrim Holiness Church and the Wesleyan Methodist
denomination in 1968, the name was changed to Vinton Wesleyan
Church.
Those who have gone before us have left us a legacy of love, labor,
